I really enjoy doing cover versions. Its a process I find very educational as I have to break down all the different sections and details of a piece of music I love. I inevitably find hidden gems in the music that I really didn’t know was there just by passively listening. I also feel I get a little glimpse into the creative mind of the artists that created the original and often find ideas that I can incorparate into my own music.
The first cover I recorded was as part of The Black Unicorns monthly ‘Crafternoon’. We all meet online to discuss what creative project we are going to do for the Sunday afternoon. We then post pictures and updates to the group and meet up after 3 hours to share our results. I really wanted to try and do some Bad Pollyanna covers so this was the perfect oppurtunity to try. The first cover was ‘The Living Dead’ and I was helped by my son Chris on this one.
The next song I tried was ‘Hookline’ the very next month. This is a more recent reelease by Bad Pollyanna and has a guitar solo by Paul for me to have a go at. Paul uses a 7 string Ibanez, I made good use of my fretboard instead, lol.
The last cover I tried by Bad Pollyanna was ‘Awake Now’. This is a song that they performed live at Whitby Goth Festival and Liv did it as a duet with my friend Eloise Kerry (Who performs the track ‘Pink Wall’ on my charity CD, The BigCD). I was blown away by this performance, the harmonies are amazing. Its such a powerful song as well. I did find this cover a challenge but again, I learnt a lot and expanded my musical abilities as well.
I always want to give credit to the original artists when I do any covers. They are the true genius here so I urge you to head over to Bad Pollyanna store and buy some of their music, they really are a superb band.
